Curwensville—-The Lady Tide of Curwensville tied a school record for wins in a season Friday night by beating visiting Sheffield, 59-28 at Patton Hall. With the victory Curwensville moved to 17-4 on the season. The win also put the Lady Tide one victory away from clinching the Allegheny Mountain League (AML) South title. If the Tide beat Ridgway today they will play Elk County Catholic (ECC) next Saturday at 6 PM at the Dubois Middle School for the AML championship. ECC has already clinched the AML North crown.
It was senior night for the Lady Tide and Shannon Hamm, the lone non-starting senior, made the most of her first start by scoring 12 points and creating and coming up with numerous steals. Hamm’s effort was the start of a total team victory as eight girls scored for coach Vic Gearhart.
Sheffield kept it close the first four minutes of the first quarter but then the Lady Tide raced away to a 17-7 lead after one and continued to pound away in the second to build a 33-16 half time margin. Curwensville’s balanced scoring resumed in the second half as the Tide outscored the Lady Wolverines 19-2 in the third period and 26-12 for the half to pull out the easy win in front of their hometown fans.
With the victory the Lady Tide matched the season record of 17 set by the 2004-05 Curwensville squad.
The Tide were lead by Dani Struble scoring 15 and Jackie White tossing in 12. Amanda Craker lead the Sheffield squad with 11 who dropped to 7-15 on the season. Both teams shot well from the free throw line with Curwensville going 11 for 13 and Sheffield making 11 of 15.
The Lady Tide JV’s won 46-42 in the opening game of the evening with freshman Tess Bloom hitting critical free throws down the stretch to help gain the win.
The Curwensville at Ridgway contest is scheduled for Saturday (today) at 1pm with the JV game immediately followed by varsity action.
