BUFFALO, N.Y. — Freshman Matt Kyler of Clearfield racked up three bonus wins en route to the 141-pound title at the 38th Annual New York State Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships hosted by the University of Buffalo Friday and Saturday.
The top-seeded Kyler pinned Mike Gregg of Oneonta in 2:07 and beat Andrew Stella of Buffalo 10-4 on the first day. Then, he capped his impressive showing with a pair of major decisions, 14-4 over No. 4 seed Andre Harrison of Nassau Community College and 12-2 over No. 2 seed Derek Frankavilla of Columbia in the finals.
Kyler, one of Army\’s three champs, now sports seven major decisions and six falls among his 22 wins in 28 bouts.
Cadet 133-pounder William Simpson, seeded third, was named the Outstanding Wrestler after knocking off No. 2 seed Chris Nottie of Nassau 3-1 in the semis and No. 1 seed and 14th-ranked Mark Budd of Buffalo 4-3 in the finals. Simpson\’s older brothers, Patrick and Phillip, earned the OW awards the last two years.
The Cadets, with three runners-up and nine placewinners in the top six, finished second in the team race, 13 points behind 24th-ranked Columbia\’s 156.

JOHNSTOWN — Former Clearfield Area High School wrestler Kyle Keane posted three wins as the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division II, swept six matches in the 2007 East Coast Duals at the Sports Center Friday and Saturday.
The Mountain Cats improved to 15-5 with victories over No. 12 Newberry (S.C.) 25-10 and Anderson (S.C.) 55-0 on Friday and Belmont Abbey (N.C.) 51-0, Limestone (S.C.) 48-0, University of North Carolina-Pembroke 31-6 and No. 14 Carson-Newman (Tenn.) 27-12 on Saturday.
Keane, a redshirt freshman 165-pounder, pinned Anderson\’s Matt Godman in 3:47 and decisioned Belmont-Abbey\’s Phil Bliss 6-4 and UNC-Pembroke\’s Jamitra Davis 4-1.
He is 5-2 in duals and 11-5 overall with four falls, one technical fall and one default.

SELINSGROVE — Clearfield native and former DuBois Central Catholic High School standout Ruth Williamson came off the bench to score a team-high 13 points as Susquehanna University defeated visiting Lebanon Valley College 65-51 in Commonwealth Conference women\’s basketball at O.W. Houts Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
The 5-8 junior guard hit four of 10 field goal attempts, including three of five from three-point range, and both free throws for the Crusaders, who evened their conference record at 3-3 and climbed to 12-5 for the season. She also had two rebounds, one assist and two steals.
Williamson, a two-year letterwinner, scored 11 points in the first half, which ended with the Crusaders on top 37-24.
She has been Susquehanna\’s high scorer in four games, including season highs in points with 17 and rebounds with seven in a 63-61 overtime loss to then undefeated Muhlenberg on Dec. 16. She was three-for-six in three-point shots and six-for-six at the foul line in that game.
Williamson, who has made 24 of 28 foul shots, is second on the team with 109 points. She has 56 rebounds, 20 assists, seven blocks and 12 steals.
Now a resident of Gettysburg, the daughter of Clearfield natives George and Susan (Thomas) Williamson scored 215 points in 25 games as a freshman and 209 in 26 games as a sophomore, when she was in double figures nine times and finished at the Crusaders\’ third leading pointmaker. She nailed a team-high 27 three-point field goals last season, including a Susquehanna and Middle Atlantic Conference record six-for-six against Lycoming.
Williamson has climbed into fifth place on Susquehanna\’s all-time three-point list with 52 and continues to be second in free throw percentage at .819 (167-for 204). She also is on the verge of becoming one of the school\’s top 25 scorers.
