CURWENSVILLE—-Matt Wassil called on sophomore David Kalgren for somemuch needed defense in the second half as the Curwensville Golden Tide pulled out a 63-55 victory over visiting Kane Friday night at Patton Hall. With the win the Tide moved to 6-4 on the season while Kane dropped to 7-5.

Junior Mike Punk was five for five from three point range in the first
half while scoring a total of 18 to give Kane a 29-28 lead at the
break. The 5\’ 10\” guard was making the Tide pay with getting open and
carrying the Wolves literally on his golden right arm. Something
needed to be corrected for Curwensville, so up stepped Kalgren.

Punk only scored 6, two three\’s, late in the fourth quarter when the
game was all but decided in Curwensville\’s favor. Kalgren was given
the second half assignment to shut down the Kane guard and what a shut
down it was. Had Punk gone out in the hallway for a drink it was
obvious Kalgren would have been in his face. Only Brad Avenali kept
Kane alive in the second half when he tossed in all of his eight points.

Philip Michaels and Shawn Sopic paced the Tide with 16 each. Brandon
McDonald scored 10, with 6 coming in the pivotal third quarter when
the Tide went in front for good.

Punk had a game high 24 to keep Kane in the game but it wasn\’t enough
as the Wolves saw their three game winning streak come to an end.

In one of the best Junior Varsity games anywhere to be found this
season Kane prevailed 70-69. The Tide JV\’s fought from over 20 down to
make a great run at the finish.

Curwensville travels to Ridgway next Wednesday for another Allegheny
Mountain League game.
