DETROIT, Jan. 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The post holiday blood supply at the American Red Cross Southeastern Michigan Blood Services
Region is down to a critical level. At this time, there is difficulty filling orders from local hospitals for blood and blood products. Donations
are needed now.
“Unless individuals step forward to make blood donations, the American Red Cross will fall further behind in meeting hospital needs.” says Diane
E. Ward, CEO, American Red Cross Southeastern Michigan Blood Services Region. “It is crucial that we replenish the blood supply now. We were
unable to meet all the requests from local hospitals today, but fortunately, no surgeries are being cancelled at this time. However, every
back order takes us one step closer to patient care being compromised.”
All blood types are needed, but there is a particular need for donors with Type O negative blood. Supplies of the “universal donor” are at
emergency levels. Only 12 units are currently available — just a two hour supply – when more than 300 units are needed.
All blood transfused to hospital patients comes from volunteer blood donors. This year alone, as many as five million patients will require
blood transfusions for medical treatments related to accidents, surgery and serious diseases like cancer or leukemia.
Anyone 17 years and older, 110 pounds or more and in good health are
