HARRISBURG – Three people were killed in traffic crashes investigated by State Police during the four-day New Year’s holiday period, which started on Dec. 29 and ended on Monday. All three of the fatal crashes were alcohol-related and two of the victims were not wearing seat belts, said State Police Commissioner Col. Jeffrey B. Miller.

In addition to the three fatalities, 245 people were injured in the 659 crashes to which troopers responded. Ninety-five of the 659 crashes were alcohol-related.

State troopers issued a total of 2,706 speeding citations, arrested 258 people for driving under the influence, cited 146 individuals for not wearing seat belts and issued citations to 12 persons for failing to secure children in child safety seats.

The report does not include statistics on incidents to which other law enforcement agencies in the state responded.

During last official New Year’s holiday driving period, which was only three days, six people died and 255 others were injured in 761 crashes to which State Police responded.
