PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (PRNewswire) – Reader’s Digest is suggesting Americans include their country on their list of New Year’s resolutions. The publisher of America’s most popular magazine has published a collection of simple yet empowering actions every American can take in 2007 to make our country a better place.

1) Be An Off-Season Donation Hero – Americans have a habit of donating blood or essentials immediately after a crisis but charities,
nonprofits, and churches are in need of donations all year-round.

2) Get A Passport – Only one in every four Americans currently holds a passport. Just having a passport is a way of making a statement: it’s
like an American I.D. and holding a valid U.S. passport is proof of nationhood as well as an implicit recognition of a larger world.

3) Start a Neighborhood Watch – Statistics show that these programs remain one of the most successful and effective ways of achieving the safety and security you desire.

4) Sign Up For Clean Energy – By signing up for clean energy, you’re telling your power company to purchase the electricity for your home
from clean sources instead of from oil, gas, or nuclear power suppliers.

5) Create a 401-Kid Plan – Start teaching your children financial planning right from the start including how to save for the future.

“These resolutions may seem small and easy on their own,” said Sacha Zimmerman, author of “For America: Simple Things Each of Us Can Do to Make Our Country Better.”

“But when you envision millions of people taking the same small actions, which is our hope for the New Year, the cumulative positive effect on our country in 2007 could be huge.”
