County Residents Could Save on Rx Drug Costs

CLEARFIELD – When finalized, the program could be viewed as a belated holiday gift from Clearfield County.

The Clearfield County Commissioners announced Tuesday that they are in the preliminary stages of making a prescription drug discount program available to all county residents.

Commissioner Chairman Mark McCracken said being part of the national program will mean discounts of up to 30 percent on prescription drugs.

The availablity of the program came as commissioners rejoined the National Association of Counties at a cost of about $1,700.

“I really feel this is going to be a tremendous benefit to the residents of Clearfield County,” said McCracken.

The commissioners noted that it will be about three months or more until cards begin to be distributed to residents, but once that action is taken, residents should have little problem in finding a participating pharmacy. Commissioner Mike Lytle said 19 participating pharmacies are in the county in just about every area.

Details are still being deciphered, but the commissioners said people should be able to use the benefit whether they have private insurance or not.

The difference is that those privately insured might not see the benefit at the cash register, but perhaps in helping to keep the amount they must pay on their premium from increasing as quickly.

Commissioner Rex Read said the information was “good, positive news in the week before Christmas.”
