Smothering Defense Gets Tide First Victory of the Season

BROCKWAY, PA.——Nothing like a good \”ole\” road trip and a victory
to bring a team together. That\’s exactly what the Curwensville Golden
Tide accomplished by knocking off Brockway 42-16 on the Rovers home
turf Tuesday night.

Matt Wassil and his boys improved to 1-1 on the year after Friday
night\’s loss to the defending state champs, Elk County Catholic, as
defense was the main ingredient. The Tide held the Rovers to just 4
second half points as the \”in-your\” face man to man scheme worked
wonders.

Curwensville jumped out to an \”ugly\” 16 to 12 halftime margin as
neither team came close to looking like an offensive powerhouse. The
two squads shot well under 20% from the field in the first half even
though they both had several clean looks at the stingy baskets. The
Tide were up 16-7 before Brockway guard Steve Cappetta scored the
final five to pull the Rovers to within 4 at the half.

The second half was different on both ends of the court for Wassil and
his squad as the Tide outscored Kurt Becker\’s Brockway five 26-4. The
Tide won the third quarter 14-1 as the Rovers only point came with .7
of a second left on a free throw by Cappetta.

Craig Bartlett and Joey Palmer finished the job for Curwensville in
the fourth stanza as they scored 5 and 7 points respectively to
outscore Brockway 12-3.

Helping Bartlett and Palmer on the night were seniors Shawn Sopic with
11 and Philip Michaels with 9. Brockway\’s terrible offensive output
was spearheaded by Cappetta\’s 6.

The Tide JV\’s picked up an easy 62-42 victory in the opening contest
of the evening.

Curwensville is back in action Wednesday with it\’s first Mo Valley
league game as Glendale comes to Patton Hall.
