HARRISBURG – A Curwensville-area firm has been awarded a contract to reclaim an abandoned mine in Pike Township, according to State Rep. Camille “Bud” George, D-74 of Houtzdale.
Bell Resources of Curwensville RD was awarded the Government-Financed Construction Contract to remove an estimated 800 feet of highball from the Caldwell property situated just northwest of Irvin Park and Curwensville Lake. The reclamation work is valued at $56,000, and about 4,200 tons of highball material will be removed from the 6.5-acre site.
According to the Moshannon District Office of the state Department of Environmental Protection, the project will address safety concerns and will reduce sedimentation of Porter and Kratzer Runs.
Both streams eventually feed into the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, although Porter Run first drains into Curwensville Lake.
The DEP developed the contract program to speed removal and reclamation of abandoned mine sites that are generally eyesores as well as major sources of siltation and pollution.
