CLEARFIELD – Clearfield County residents gathered Saturday morning to honor those who answered the call of duty.
A Veterans Day ceremony was held at the American Legion, John Lewis Shade Post No. 6, with music from the Clearfield Bison Band and comments from various officials and clergymen.
The featured speaker, Clearfield County District Attorney William A. Shaw Jr., talked about those in Clearfield County who have continually answered the call to serve their country.
“It is an absolute honor and a privilege to be here today,” Shaw said.
Shaw, himself a U.S. Coast Guard veteran, said the things he sees in his work directly contradict the brave acts carried out by American soldiers.
He said drug use in Clearfield County is on the rise.
“This drug use now threatens the well-being that these men and women fought for.
Shaw used Veterans Day to call upon everyone in the county to become more active participants in their communities. He asked people to get involved in maintaining public safety through various avenues, including reporting drug use.
“(Those in Iraq) are fighting so that we can stay here and Clearfield County and America and be safe in our homes.”
