CLEARFIELD – No one expects a jail sentence to be one of rest and relaxation, but Clearfield County Jail’s female inmates are experiencing crowding.
Clearfield County Jail Warden Sam Lombardo reported to the Clearfield County Prison Board this week that he is seeing a lot of women being sentenced to six- and nine-month jail terms.
This, he said, causes crowding in the smaller female area of the lockup.
“There’s never been enough room since the jail’s been built for females,” Lombardo said.
The board discussed the possibility of housing some of the females out-of-county, but no action was taken.
“Is that going to be a greater hardship on them and their families tohave them onr or two hours away from their families?” asked Clearfield County Commissioner Mark McCracken.
Lombardo said that even the state system is seeing overcrowding issues for female inmates.
Lombardo was directed to talk with the female inmates currently at CCJ to determine their thoughts on the tight quarters.
