HYDE —Batterymates Nick Gillung and Dustin Dubensky combined for seven hits and nine runs batted in as front-running Punxsutawney kept Clearfield in third place in the Jefferson County Legion League with a 14-5 win at the Clearfield Area High School Sports Complex Wednesday evening.
Punxsy improved to 11-3 while the Chiefs fell to 9-4. DuBois remained tied with Punxsy for first place by nipping Brookville 4-3 in eight innings.
Gillung, who pitched the first three innings and departed with an 11-1 lead, hammered a home run, two doubles and a single good for four RBIs. Dubensky pounded a homer, double and single for a five-RBI game.
Alex Cressley worked the last four innings for the win, while Clearfield starter Drew Hipps took the loss, allowing eight hits and nine runs, six of them earned, in two innings. Max Condon checked the visitors on five hits in five innings but gave up five runs.
Brandon Evans led the Chiefs with four consecutive hits, one a double, and a pair of RBIs. Shane Davis belted a solo home run and a single, James Zimmerman had a double and a single, and Beau Ryan, Trey Wallace and Condon added singles. Ryan and Condon drove in the other two runs.
Clearfield was outhit only 13-11 but was charged with seven errors.
Manager Sid Lansberry\’s team, 15-6 overall, faces a grueling schedule starting with road games against Gortech at Showers Field in DuBois Friday and Curwensville at Hepburnia Sunday. Home games with Reynoldsville Monday and Thursday are sandwiched around trips to DuBois Tuesday and State College Wednesday, the latter for a non-league test against the State College Babe Ruth League All-Stars. All games are set for 6 p.m. except for Sunday\’s 2 p.m. start.
