CLEARFIELD – Shawn Owens Towing of Shawville sponsored the racing action at Gamblers Raceway Park on Friday night as three drivers found the winners circle for the first time this season including Cody \”The Kid\” Schultz of Hyde in the late models, \”Mighty\” Mike Stine of Smithmill in the small-block modifieds and Mark Hummel of Osceola Mills in the four cylinders.
Repeat winners included Dan Smeal of Houtzdale in the street stocks, Craig Bainey of Morrisdale in the pure stocks and Scott Flory of Port Matilda in the wild cards.
The late models took to the track and Luke Hoffner and Schultz were setting the pace, running side-by-side, but on lap 22 Hoffner pitted and Schultz had to contend with Waylon Wagner for the win. When the checkered flag waved it was Schultz winning his first of the season with Wagner, Rick Lias, Chris Knuth and Butch Brian completing the top five. Hoffner and Wagner won the preliminaries.
The small block modifieds saw Mike Stine take his first feature in a few years as he was able to hold off all challengers during the race. The feature saw a four-car pile-up on lap nine when Kevin Dickson got out of shape and collecting Derek Rodkey, Faye Lumadue and Bill Blum. Blum and Lumadue were done for the night. Stine held off Mark Frankhouser for his first win in about two years. The top five were: Stine, Frankhouser, Dickson, Bob Garvey and George Sankey. Preliminary wins went to Stine and Frankhouser.
Always one of the best events of the night the street stocks took to the track with 12 cars taking the green and Dan Smeal taking the lead. He was able to hold off the challenges of Dan Gill and Gary Little for the victory. The top five at the finish were Smeal, Little, Gill, Tom Williams and Denny Curry. Smeal and Curry won the heats.
In pure stock action Craig Bainey picked up his third win of the season in the pure stocks by beating Jeff Mease to the line. Jason Peters, Jason Bainey and Paul Kot completed the top five. The heat was won by Bainey.
The four-cylinder feature was won by Mark Hummel, as he picked up the victory in the last race for the class, as it is being eliminated from the schedule effective immediately due to low car counts. Hummel held off Bob Ralston Jr. Nick Erskine, David Weidow and Lester Hudson for the victory. Don Henry won the heats.
The four-cylinder sidewinders saw a caution and then black flags fly for Lynn Stiver and Mark Hubler Jr. after they were driving rough. Scott Flory was able to get the lead and hold off all challengers for his fourth win of the year. Terry Smith was second ahead of Todd Ostrofsky, Mike Williams and Adam Dysard. Heat wins went to Ostrofsky and Kirk Hess.
Coming up this week is another regular show for the late models, small block modifieds, street stocks, pure stocks and four cylinder sidewinders. The regular racing action will be joined by Bud Garvey\’s Old Timers Vintage Race Cars. Gates open at 5 p.m. with racing set for 7:30 p.m. sharp.
