PHILIPSBURG – Senior pitcher Trey Wallace and junior shortstop Adam Jury of Clearfield Area High School were named to the second team and teammate Kurt Miller was accorded honorable mention as a designated hitter on the 2006 Central Penn League All-Star Team announced at the annual dinner meeting in the Philipsburg Country Club Wednesday night.
Five Philipsburg-Osceola players, including senior catcher Matt Adams and junior designated hitter Ben Maurer on the first unit, were selected by the head coaches after providing nominations from their own teams. Other Mounties earning recognition were senior outfieldeer Jordan Luzier and junior outfielder A.J. Czap on the second team and sophomore shortstop Matt Curtis on the honorable mention list.
Joining Adams and Maurer on the first team were first baseman Lance Leathers, second baseman Cody Young, shortstop Tyler James and outfielder Matt Truesdale of Bellefonte, outfielder Chris Moyer and pitcher Mike Pierce of champion State College, third baseman Brett Weibley of Hollidaysburg, outfielder Nick Wellar of Bald Eagle Area and pitcher Nick Gillung of Punxsutawney. Leathers, Weibley and Gillung are juniors.
Eleven of the 14 CPL teams entered post-season play, with nine reaching district finals and four winning titles. District 6 Class AA champ P-O and 6-AAAA king Altoona advanced to the PIAA quarterfinals Thursday.
